This study was based on the results of a field survey conducted in four countries:Benin, Togo, Senegal and Mali. This research came after a study by the AFDon vocational training in the informal sector, which showed that the traditionaleducational system, which was strongly implanted in western Africa, has beengradually evolving and that its vocational training contents, pedagogical practicesand modes of validation and qualification are being restructured, forming apost-primary system of vocational training liable to involve thousands of youthsemployed at craftsmen's workshops in the four countries studied.
